Position Description - Produce Wash/Pack Supervisor

Good Dog Farm is currently seeking full- or part-time candidates to assist with food production for the 2024 farming season (late May through November) with a focus on supervising all wash-pack activities. Some experience working in a food production setting required, with preference and increased pay for applicants with specific produce wash-pack experience. Each week, we harvest 20-40 different products, which are stored in 3 separate temperature settings, and packed out for sale to at least 5 different sales outlets. Successful candidates will be highly motivated with a strong desire to learn the ins-and-outs of our operation, in order to ensure our high quality produce safely and efficiently reaches our customers.

This is predominantly an indoor position.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years in a farm, grocery, or back-of-house food service position

  • A willingness to work in all weather

  • Reliable transportation to and from the farm

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly and easily, and work physically all day

  • Familiarity with a wide variety of produce and a willingness to learn

  • Ability to work well in an inclusive team environment

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with the farm owners to lead produce washing and packing throughout the season

  • Take feedback and work with owners to implement and improve wash-pack systems 

  • Coordinate with harvest crew to ensure timely and orderly washing of all produce 

  • Supervise cleaning and organization of our 1500 sq-ft climate controlled produce handling area

  • Observe all farm policies related to food and worker safety

    • Maintain and complete all food safety logs and documents for Food Safety Plan

  • Maintain a strong organizational system. Minimize waste and confusion during the packing process

Base pay begins at $17/ hour up to $20/hour for experienced applicants, with opportunities for future raises. Paid sick days and PTO also offered. As a supervisory role, there will be a 30-day probationary period to make sure candidates are a good fit for the position. The wash-pack supervisor position is a part-time position, Monday-Wednesday each week May 20 - Nov 22. Interested applicants may also opt to work Thursday and Friday each week in a non-supervisory role as part of the field crew (weeding, planting, harvesting etc). Opportunities for winter work may also be available for the right applicant.

Position Description - Seasonal Crew Member

Good Dog Farm is currently seeking candidates to assist with all farm activities from July 31, 2024 - November 22, 2024. Tasks will include planting, weeding, harvesting, and packing organic vegetables for CSA and wholesale markets. Some experience working in farming or another outdoor work environment is preferred, but not required. Successful candidates will be highly motivated, with a strong attention to detail, and a desire to learn. You will be working directly with the farm owners, field manager and our experienced crew. Applicants must be able to show up ready to move quickly and efficiently in all weather and enjoy working on a fun, inclusive team.

We are seeking both full-time and part time candidates. Base pay begins at $16/hour for applicants with no experience, up to $18.50/hour for experienced applicants, with opportunities for future raises. Paid sick days and PTO also offered. Deadline to apply is June 21, 2024.

Responsibilities

  • Report to work on time and be ready to begin day’s tasks within 5 minutes of designated start time

  • Work with and take direction from owners and managers to complete any and all necessary farm tasks in an efficient and timely manner. Breakdown of tasks roughly as follows:

    • Harvest crew ~70% of the time

    • Production fieldwork (eg, planting, weeding, etc) ~30% of time

  • Be in communication with other farm staff at all times via walkie talkie (or if necessary, cell phone)

  • Participate in team meetings, training, etc as scheduled

  • Follow all posted signs and procedures in the workplace to ensure the quality of produce and safety of the crew

Good Dog Farm is a Certified Naturally Grown and GAP food safety certified vegetable farm on 25 acres in Upperco, Maryland. We founded the farm in June of 2016 after many years of farm management experience. Our farm is also Fair Food Certified, and we are committed to providing a fair, safe, and equitable working environment for all employees. We use sustainable growing practices to protect our soil and waterways, and strive to produce high quality, affordable produce for wholesale and for our 300-family CSA service. Our name comes from our shared love of our dog who reminds us to live simply and have fun every day.

Given the risk of COVID-19 and other illnesses, it is also essential that new employees be able and willing to comply with all farm policies designed to mitigate risks to the crew and customers. This also means being fully vaccinated, except for those exempt under the Americans with Disabilities Act and willing to wear a mask while working indoors. Agricultural work is essential work and we expect everyone on the farm to take each other’s health and the safety of our food system seriously.
